Nervous System Regulation Tools

Feb 19, 2024

This past week I was scrolling LinkedIn and the typical platitudes were making their rounds on my timeline.

You know the ones that encourage you to trust fate and look at the silver linings in really questionable situations. They were all of the ones that make you go “Well yeah, duh that’s a given, we know that already.”

But there was one in particular I came across that I just can’t get behind anymore. At least not without a caveat.

It’s feel the fear and do it anyway.

I know you’ve heard this before.

Of course, I do think that this can work for small moments of bravery, but seldom long-term endeavors that require a little bit more introspection and work - like you and your career.

More often than not, I see that some clients of mine have had trouble moving forward with that one task that would make all the difference. No matter how much they consciously wanted to move forward- their body rejected it.

Yup, you heard that right, and maybe you’ve experienced it too.

Your heart randomly racing.

A physical pressure in your chest.

Waves of anxiety or panic that persist.

The thought of proceeding quite literally leaves you in a state of fight or flight.

If you notice a period of stagnation in one area of your life or an aversion to moving forward meaningfully, this could be why.

Soooo… how are we supposed to work through that in a way that’s healthy when your body rejects progress??

I now offer a different approach. No more feel the fear and do it anyways.

Instead, feel the fear, heal your nervous system, and then proceed.

Nervous system regulation right off the bat sounds like something that is super complex and takes forever, but there are several ways you can get started and see immediate results.

I’ve tried all of these and am SO happy I stumbled across them over the last several years.

They’ve helped me present in front of big crowds.

They’ve led to me not getting nervous before meetings anymore.

And they’ve helped me reframe whatever limiting beliefs have held me back too.

There are wayyy too many people who don’t know about these tools until deep into their professional journey, and in my opinion, that’s too late.

When you’re paving your own way, it’s a non-negotiable to have these resources in your toolbox so that you can keep going and combat the inevitable limiting beliefs, self-doubt, and loneliness that arise.

Signs of A Dysregulated Nervous System Can Include:

Heightened Anxiety, Mood Swings, Difficulty Concentrating, Insomnia, Hypervigilance, Emotional Numbing and more.

If this sounds like you, I'd recommend potentially trying out some of the following resources.

How To Fix A Dysregulated Nervous System:

Your Nervous System Regulation Starter Toolbox

1. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping)

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT tapping), is a form of psychological acupressure. All you do is tap lightly on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on the root of a specific issue, such as a negative emotion that arises when you try to do a specific task. EFT is designed to release emotional blockages, reduce stress, and promote emotional healing.

Brad Yates on Youtube is an amazing resource with tons of knowledge on pretty much any topic you may be struggling with.  You can also work with a practitioner to get started for more personalized help.

2. Anti-Anxiety Music

Anti-Anxiety music quickly reduces cortisol levels and counteracts the body’s stress response. Weightless by Marconi Union was found to reduce levels of stress and anxiety by 65%, and produced a greater state of relaxation than any other song out there. In just 8 minutes you’ll feel better and more relaxed than ever. Other songs that made the list included Adele’s Someone Like You and Airstream by Electra.

3. Breathwork

Breathwork helps calm your body's stress response by making you take slow, deep breaths, which tells your brain to relax. It releases natural feel-good chemicals to make you feel calmer and more in control of your circumstances. Doing this on a consistent basis, can help you manage your emotions better and feel happier overall. You can find apps in the app store to get started!
